Someone mentioned the population of guilford county. Mecklenburg county has a population of over a million people. Wilkes is only 34 sq miles larger than Mecklenburg, But we still kill more animals here.

Rumor has it the state has been contacted for violations of the Animal Welfare Act. Does it apply? I have no idea but the refusal to allow independent oversight certainly makes one wonder what's being hid and why.

All I can say is provide proof.
I would agree if this was a one time thing. But this has happened before. In fact, I think a similar thing happened recently with a cat. And just because the shelter was not at capacity when an inspector came, what does that actually prove? I am sure the numbers fluctuate all the time.
My suggestion is call the County Manager and ask him about it.

Mistake is on thing incompetence is another: When a person lacks the ability, skills, or knowledge to do their job correctly and to a satisfactory standard they are incompetent.
It is my understanding that the excuse of am vs pm is a mute point. The dog it seems "Hoyt" was euthanized immediately.
I'm sure this isn't the first time a dog was euthanized upon arrival. The family of the dog only found out because they had put up posters and the neighbor that had called Animal Control told Hoyt's family what had happened.
What if this happened to a family member? A person? Try telling someone it was a "simple mistake" that killed your loved one.
My dogs and cats are family members!
Speaking for a minute about the incompetent staff how then do you explain the fact that Wilkes shelter ranked first in euthanasia totals in 2021 and 2018 and second in 2023, 2022, 2020 and 2019?Is this due to a single mistake?
Although capacity of the Wilkes shelter is 102 dogs and 96 cats, none of these NCDA inspections in 2020-2023 found more than 45 dogs and 28 cats. Wilkes County Manager John Yates said these reports on numbers of dogs and cats housed don't reflect how quickly larger dogs can cause the shelter to not have enough space.
So this fact above also speaks to incompetent staff and also a very lame excuse by the town manager.
Is it his thought that the Big dogs need to be killed first? And why was the shelter way below capacity but had the highest KILL rate?
Another fact: The 2023 NCDA report on animal shelters said the Wilkes shelter euthanized 2,803 dogs and cats combined in 2023. This was more than in Mecklenburg, Wake, Guilford, Forsyth and other urban counties.I mean come on man! Guilford county alone has a population was 541,299!
A person who is involved in animal rescue efforts recently resigned from her position at the Wilkes Animal Shelter because of her concerns about certain incidents at the shelter, said associates of the person who resigned.Do you think she thought simple mistakes where happening?
These innocent, guiltless and blameless animals have No voice. They have No defense. They are just killed because they are unfortunate enough to be born in this county and captured by the Wilkes County Animal Control!

It is a hard job. But that is why they need help. We need less animals. And that is why is a no brainer to allow a group have a worker there for up to a year at no cost to the county to help solve the issues. Especially when they are willing to bring in a veterinarian for help.

Okay points from a common person. 1. The lady called because her dog was inside and in heat. The dog outside was being a nuisance. She called animal control. 2. Animal control came and did their job. This dog was on someone else's property. It did not have any identification including a rabies tag or chip or collar with the owner's information. 3. From that point, it "appears" Animal control did not do their job correctly. I wasn't there to know about the owner calling and the employee responding about what the dog did/did not look like. We all have different ways of describing things so I am not sure how that went awry. 4. The dog was "mistakenly" put down too soon.
Now I hate to say this, but who on here has not ever made a mistake at their job. I know I have and I am not saying what happened was right, but it is really easy to point the finger and play the blame game. I was not there AND NEITHER WERE ANY OF YOU. Animal Control has a really difficult job. They are out at all hours in all kinds of situations. If you all think you can do a better job maybe you should see if they have any openings.

I agree. I do not want cats and dogs in my yard either. If I wanted crap in my yard, I would have a dog. I am sick of tired of cats next door killing the birds I feed.

Folks I think we are missing something obvious here. What is the reason Animal Control of Wilkes mills so many animals and why are the commissioners unwilling to allow an independent observer be part of the process.
They are hiding something.

Blame everyone else. You are the problem. Not the commissioners fault. You want to dictate how others take care of their pets. Do you really think cat owners shouldn't let them outside, insanity. Stupid people is the problem, ignorant people is the problem. Go ahead blame it on the commissioners. Then call animal control and get your neighbors animal caged and killed.

Be sure to read the editorial article in the JP. If the commissioners do not approve the help of this group, we should protest.
According to the editorial, the veterinary help I mentioned before was for spaying and neutering. This is a no brainer. Animal lovers do not give a crap about someone thinking they might lose some control by having a volunteer working down there. What is wrong with our leadership?
Maybe they had rather animal taken care of by individuals like their former commissioner.

On the animal shelter website it states they get over 6,000 animals. John Yates, county manager said he " wanted it known that 87% of dogs and cats at the county animal shelter determined to be adoptable in 2023 were adopted."
They killed over 2800. These numbers are off or is he saying that most animals are not determined to be adoptable?

Pet owners have responsibilities too. They should not allow their pets to be nuisances to their neighbors. I have a friend highly allergic to cats. His neighbor allows their cats to roam and they have started to lay on my friend's outdoor furniture. This should not happen. If you want a cat, keep in inside or buy several acres of land. Do not live in a subdivision.
We have 2 commissioners trying to help the county. But both are leaving. So this county is in for trouble I think if the last few months are any indications. It has been nothing but shameful.

I think its common knowledge that Animal Control employees coach people to say that dogs are aggressive so the protocol will be skipped and the animal immediately picked up.
I'm thinking a soup to nuts investigation needs to be done that includes the disposal of the animals. Clearly the county has something to hide if they are refusing independent observation.

Stories like this infuriate me. Sure, Hoyt should have been neutered and chipped. However, the lady called animal control knew this was someone's pet and likely knew the owners. Hoyt had two collars. Also, her dog was in heat so she was partly responsible for not having her dog spayed. And of course the animal shelter knew this was someone's pet, not a feral dog or stray. They were in a subdivision. Do your homework people. When I moved from the country to a subdivision years ago my lab was a neighborhood nuisance when it came to dogs in heat so I had to get him neutered at 7 years of age, and I did what I had to do. Male dogs act differently in search of satisfying biological desires. Everyone botched this one, but ultimately the animal shelter should have given Hoyt a little extra time knowing they nabbed someone's pet and then tried to cover it up.
