Wilkes animal shelter

interesting fact

Posted 5:37 pm, 08/28/2024

I don't think the animal zoo would work. The median household income in wilkes is $49,000. 19% of individuals are in poverty. There are about 27,000 households. I bet half don't pay taxes. Think of the amount of workers it would take to care for animals and their food and care.

People will have to spay or neuter or we will continue being number 1.

I think Harris will try. She is trying to control food prices and will cause a food shortage that has happened in other countries.

Wouldn't surprise me if she puts limits on salaries of professional people and will cause young people to stop going into these professions. But who knows? She refuses to talk . She thinks she can win if she shuts up.
Well, I like her better if she keeps that mouth shut.

Serious, start a zoo for dogs, cats and other animals. We get a bill every year like property tax. The zoo is free for all to come. Tax everyone enough to buy land, big fenced in areas for dogs. How much are we willing to pay for a zoo. I think 500 a year for all property owners. Have full time veterinarian for zoo. I would be very happy paying for one. The commissioners can't help all those animals. We all will need to help. Big arse problem. Get rid of the kill center, start a wild life zoo. That is the only way in our society. People complain about cats, its sad. Crazy world we living in. I'm a animal lover, all of them.

We now have a shortage of veterinarians. I do not know why. I guess just like doctors, we do not have enough. Prices for their services is outrageous just like our increases in insurance premiums, interest rates, food, utilities. A friend said her dog check up visit was $400. Even my doctor does not charge that much.

Spay and neutering is the answer in my opinion. And I heard that the Humane Society did give out reduced priced vouchers for this but vets are no longer taking them because they do not have the enough staff to do surgeries. Some are not even taking new patients.

This is why I think the commissioners need to accept this help from the Best Friends group. It will only get worse here.

When I was growing up the animals ran free. Today people think animals should be inside 24/7. Animals need to be outside like we do. Big dogs should only be with people with lots of land. You shouldn't be allow big dogs unless you have land for them to roam. I know people that call animal control for all kinds of animals. We are the problem also. Also vets are getting way to expensive, thanks joe/harris. Then the shots, flea control, etc. They should tax us to take care of these animals, make a pet zoo for dogs, cats, racoons, etc. Tax everyone to take care of animals at a zoo. No more killing animals.

In my opinion, Randleman, Johnson and Sexton had a negative reaction. They agreed to continue talking with this group, but it seemed that they were all about who keeps control. The letter said the Best Friends paid worker would have a leadership role. I don't think they liked that. Please watch it for yourself to see if you agree with me or them.

These 2 commissioners always negative attitudes in my opinion. I was hoping that Randleman would have an open mind about issues. If this is any indication, we are up the creek again.

FYI I've adopted 3 dogs and 2 cats but you bleeding hearts missed my point. There needs to be more responsible people who takes care of their animals. IE don't let them roam freely IE take them to the vet the list can go on. You're right it's not the dogs it's irresponsible owners who idk for what ever reason wants the animal but can't keep up with it once they own it.

I am for having animals but if you let your animal roam free then don't complain when they get injured or picked up be responsible enough to take care of your pet.

interesting fact, which commissioners had a negative attitude about control of the shelter?

Someone needs to mention the #1 award that goes to the Wilkes county and the Wilkes Animal Shelter. For 2 years, Wilkes county killed the most animals out of 75 other shelters. 4 other years, Wilkes was # 2. Wilkes animal shelter killed over 2800 animals in 2023. This is a disgrace to this county.

An animal group, Best Friends made an offer to Wilkes to put one of their employees into the shelter and help the staff for up to a year for no cost to the county and teaching staff different ways to stop these needless deaths. They even said that some veterinary assistance would be available. They claim they could help the shelter cut the deaths by 90%.

Unfortunately, I thought 3 of our commissioners had a negative attitude during discussions due to who would have control. To me, why would even be a question of doing this? If you are receiving free help, and learning ways to slow down this killing, how could it be a negative thing?

This county should be ashamed. With our current economy, the number of deaths will only increase with families having problems feeding their children so how can they feed animals and have proper medical care?

These facts are very disturbing to learn just after a few months of an ex commissioner being accused of dog fighting and animal abuse. Do we want to be known now as animal killers instead of moonshiners?

Guy,
All my life I have always adopted the shelter dogs.
I have three now!
I can't adopt them all.

What about you smart arse?

Have you done anything to help them?

It's not the dogs!!!!

Yes, that's my understanding.

And I'm with you here. It's has gone on way to long.

I've heard stories over the years of this happening several times.
It has to stop and the only way we can help these innocent animals is by coming together and making our voices heard!
They have no voice!

Here's an interesting fact. Why isn't anyone adopting the animals better yet why are there any responsible owners of the animals. Many times the "responsible" owners just let them roam the neighborhood without care to their neighbors and animals.

interesting fact

For years there have been incidents like this when animals were not given the 72 hours.

But this case you mentioned, I would bet that this dog was put down as soon as it came in. I don't believe the am and pm story. Didn't the owners go there 2 times and the dog was not there?

Totally agree!!!

Something has to happen here!
I suggest everyone take a few minutes to email all the county commissioners!
And John Yates! If you did read the article you will see he's doing nothing but making piss poor excuses as to why this is happening
"Wilkes County Manager John Yates said these reports on numbers of dogs and cats housed don't reflect how quickly larger dogs can cause the shelter to not have enough space."

So in his words let's make sure to kill those bigger dogs!

And then you have this!

A Millers Creek family's loss of a dog at the Wilkes County Animal Shelter in July isn't enough to prompt significant changes at the facility, it's hard to imagine what will. The hunting dog, named Hoyt, had belonged to a 23-year-old member of the family who died June 30, 2023.

An animal control officer picked up Hoyt from the property of a neighbor who complained about him. He then was euthanized before being held for the state-mandated 72 hours, a period that is supposed to give owners time to claim a dog or cat at the shelter.

County officials said Hoyt was euthanized prematurely when a shelter employee thought the written time of his arrival at the shelter said "a.m.," when it actually said "p.m." Family members called the shelter twice and went there twice looking for Hoyt without success within 72 hours after the evening he was picked up. They believe Hoyt was euthanized immediately.
