Anti, what is the meaning of pray (to you)

That's a great question, Foxy, but I'm afraid that the honest answer is... I don't know.
You could have stopped rambling right there and not exposed you absolute ignorance. Friend, you do not have a clue.

Anti, what is the meaning of pray (to you)

That's a great question, Foxy, but I'm afraid that the honest answer is... I don't know.

Jesus said that you're not supposed to ask God for things, because He already knows what you need. So the whole "please give Johnny strength while he's fighting cancer," while well meaning, is sort of pointless.

Reciting a mantra over and over, though, doesn't exactly fill one with The Spirit.

I imagine that the point is to take comfort, knowing that you're giving your problems to God instead of keeping them within.

In John chapter 6, it certainly appears that Jesus prayed in public before a meal. He was surrounded by 5,000 men and gave thanks for fish and bread.

I found where Jesus prayed 25 times in the Bible.

I read the passages of Matthew 11, John 11, John 12, and John 17. While Jesus does appear to be speaking to God, there's no "Amen" so I'm not sure why they're considered to be a prayer? That kinda reaches back to what Foxy said, though... is just speaking out loud considered a prayer, or does it have to end with Amen?

John 17 is the most compelling, though, and reads more like a prayer...

But again, with no "Amen" at the end, it's hard to say.

And oddly, it seems to contradict Matthew 6! Jesus is asking God to do things throughout the prayer, which is exactly what He said not to do!

I think you've made an excellent point with those passages, and I have to admit to being a little confused now. This feels like a contradiction, and I honestly don't know which one to believe.

Every person should pray as if the only person listening is God.
All the common taters listening in ... meh. Forget em.

Don't get me wrong. There is a Creator. It is just Not the One or the Way that we have been taught to believe and worship.

Think about it.....Why do you need different Religions to serve the same God?? If this were true, then that would mean that only one of those religions is the right religion. That would mean that the other religions that worship the same God but in a slightly different way are going to ****? You see what I mean? This is going to be very hard on some people. Be easy with them.

Religion was created for a couple of reasons. Too keep you controlled and to keep you divided. Catholics, Baptists, Methodists,......also, Repubs, Dems, Libs......do yall see the pattern here?

Well I imagine a lot of people are going to have a very , very, very difficult time when everyone learns the truth about all Religion. Who do you all think really wrote the Bible?? Remember, everything is a LIE.

When it said hypocrite you shouldn't have taken it so personal Anti. There are more hypocrites than YOU. YOU might be one of the biggest and most evident, but sweetheart there are more than you.

Why do you keep posting religious post on here only to expose your true ignorance on the subject? You would be better off talking about gay beer.

I think that the New American Standard Bible translates Matthew chapter 6 better for our more modern ears. I think Jesus was telling us that hypocrites like to be noticed when they pray so their reward is being noticed. I don't think it is an order against praying with others.

In John chapter 6, it certainly appears that Jesus prayed in public before a meal. He was surrounded by 5,000 men and gave thanks for fish and bread. In Luke 22 we see that Jesus "gave thanks" before the Last Supper when He was with His disciples.

There are several examples of Jesus praying in public to be found in the Bible. John 11:41, Luke 3:21, and Luke 10:21 come to mind as "for examples."

NO it does not say not to pray in public

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

This verse in the Gospel of Mark does not say that the Lord's Prayer is the only proper prayer.

Luke 11 duplicates the passage in Matthew...

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

... and it continues to repeat the Lord's Prayer.

What passage makes you believe that there are other ways to pray?

My family prayers over our food in public. If we shouldn't prayer in public why do we pray at church?

Well... Matthew 6:5 that I pasted above says not to pray "standing in the synagogues," too. Considering that was the only church in Jesus' time... maybe you're not supposed to pray in church, either?

But Jesus explicitly said that you should only do it in secret...

Mark 11:24
New King James Version
24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

This verse in the Gospel of Mark does not say that the Lord's Prayer is the only proper prayer. It says when you pray to believe that you already have received and you will have them. My family prayers over our food in public. If we shouldn't prayer in public why do we pray at church?

I see it all the time... people pray to God by talking to Him like a friend, and asking him for things.

Why do you do this, when Jesus said it's wrong?

Matthew 6...

Don't pray in public. You should go into a closet, shut the door, and pray in secret.

Don't ask for things, because God knows what you need before you ask.

The only proper prayer is the Lord's Prayer.
