Bertie, I have a 12ga pump but swinging it around in close quarter could be a problem. However, I do have some OObuck and some 12ga slugs if I have to use it outside.

kynster, I'm not sure why you brought 9mm's and .38 specials into this, you're way out in left field.

Consul,
For inside home defense you might want to consider a tactical12gauge pump shotgun loaded with "low brass" #7 bird shot. You don't have to be as accurate as with a handgun, the low brass bird shot isn't likely to over penetrate the bad guy and won't likely go through walls. With the distances you'd likely engage an intruder a full load of bird shot to any part of the body would be completely devastating to the bad guy(s)...plus nothing says you've picked the wrong house as the slid being actioned on a pump shotgun.

Do tell henry! 9mm has the same powder charge as .38 Special. You should recognize Special, henry. You're google search sure paid off! For the rest of us!

High powered handguns are overkill in most police perp engagements, a 357 mag. for instance can go clean through the intended target and hit an innocent bystander. Whereas a low velocity large caliber is much more effective in both stopping and incapacitating the intended target. My weapon of choice for home protection is a .45 revolver. Due to the large caliber and low velocity (approx. 950fps) it will not pass through an intruder but will almost certainly stop them wherever it hits.

Most police engagements involving firearms are at close quarters and have no need for high velocity weapons.

The 10mm is a .40 S&W magnum. Very hot round, it will take you out like a .45 ACP. The problem was the guns were not built to support the round. The recoil shook them apart with some catastrophic failures.

Why did we ever take 357mags away from Police. They rarely had to shot people more than one or two times with a 357. They didn't waste ammo shooting people so many times. If they are in a real gun fight they need an AR or a shotgun. I remember when SHP went to 9mm's, they shot more people in 9 months than they did in the previous 5 years. The FBI went to 10mm because 9mm's were not good at shooting through car windshields. FBI weapons before this auto craze were 38 stub noses. It was just the influence of the gun companies selling gun nuts guns at tax payer's expense.
