No, it closed because it was in a bad location and no one knew it existed. The few people that did go complained about high prices, low quality, and bad service.
Further, it wasn't a "higher end bar" like I suggested... it was more of a redneck dive bar.
So we need higher priced places?

It does not matter the party in county politics. We have seen what these conservatives did.....$32M spent. they could have had 450,000 sq ft for $7M. Biggest blunder in the county history. Voters better not forget who put that debt on them.

Partisan bias is irrelevant on a county level. Not that it matters... you would have to have three "leftists" run and win before they could make a difference, but we're in the least highly educated county in the nation! Intelligent people don't stand a chance.
Keith Elmore was an executive with a big company, and the only commissioner with intelligence in a very long time. But he was constantly overruled by a dog fighter and presumed money launderer, somebody from UPS and a former paramedic, and a GED instructor.
And the next run will be the same... Shirley Randleman is a lifelong politician with experience, but she'll be overruled by the GED instructor, a mechanic, and whichever crony they appoint to replace the dog fighter.
As a people, we're just too stupid to elect people that could actually help the county.

How about finding people that have ran large companies? Not little landscaping, or truck hauling businesses. Someone that understands business and the difference in $17 a sq ft and $495 a sq ft. It seems the educator and the other guy could not understand the difference.

Just think of how many years wilkes county citizens will be paying for the $32M building that was not even needed. They decided to build a new county office building instead of building what was needed, the DSS and Health department.
So yes, it is bad leadership.

Liar, that is not what the article said but that has never stopped the Wilkes haters from repeating it...the article did say that Wilkes citizens possessed the least amount of "terminal" degrees, ie, Doctorates and Masters degrees; which was the only education levels that the article focused on. What does that mean, it means that at the time of the article if every adult in Wilkes had a Bachelor's level education degree, Wilkes would have still fallen prey to the slanted view of the article because it only focused on the higher education levels.

If we want to attract people with money to open businesses, we have to have things that will make them want to live here. This usually means adult oriented nightlife... higher end bars, clubs, restaurants other than fast food, etc.
"Build it and they will come..."
Imagine that you live in, say, Charlotte and had $5 million in the bank. You want to go somewhere safer and smaller to open a business. Are you going to go to Mooresville, for example, where people are educated, the community is growing, and there are things to do? Or to Wilkes, where people are mostly uneducated, can't pass a drug test, and there are few places to eat and there's nothing to do unless you're willing to drive an hour?

Great question, Heps, and I wish I had an answer. It has to be a combination of bad leadership and a bad workforce.
You'll remember a few years ago, the Wall Street Journal said that Wilkes was the least educated county in the entire nation! Even worse than the county that Deliverance was based on 
It may have changed a little since then, but the simple fact is that higher paying jobs don't go to places where there aren't any educated workers.
Worse, our workforce seems to be morally opposed to education! They believe that they deserve maximum wages with minimum effort.
Add to that is our high rate of drug usage and arrests... just last week the JP reported, what was it, 30 drug arrests? Nobody wants to be somewhere that employees can't pass the drug test.
We all know that the leadership has been doing their best to make this a retirement community, too. As of 2022, about 36% of our population was over 55 years old!
I can add things like the fact that there's nothing to do here but watch the grass grow, but Ashe and Alleghany are no different and they're not as poor as us. So the lack of education, drugs, and poor leadership are what I think sets us apart.

The county survived when the Lowes office left.
Barely! A lot of the higher paid employees went with them, causing a drop in our overall economy. The companies that supported Lowes also left, exacerbating the economic loss.
You'll recall that Wilkes is the only economically distressed county in the High Country region... the counties in gray are the most distressed...

If Tyson leaves, that's over 2000 people newly unemployed. Plus the chicken farmers with millions invested but no buyers. The county might survive, but it would definitely suffer.
