Registering to vote in Michigan must be completed prior to 8:pm on election day. Just because election officials in Ann Arbor stayed after the polls closed to register voters does not mean they didn't break the law.
Too bad YOU missed this part:
Approximately 600 voters were registered and allowed to vote absentee after the 8:00 pm deadline on November 8, in direct violation of MCL 168.731(3).Unbelievable as it sounds, more than 120 of these voters registered on November 9, and their ballots were counted in the November 8 election

Even though polls closed at 8 p.m., those who were still in the hours-long lines for same-day voter registration were allowed to go through and vote, which lasted until about 2 a.m. before the last ballot was cast, officials said.
