Do you know any middle class single income married couples with kids building homes and buying new cars ?

Note from GoNC: I left this post because I'm not sure if it's responding to Fakey / BigSal's removed argument or to Foxnose's comment on September 18 at 9:06am.

"Which is what happened after the 2007-09 Bush Recession."

Anti could you refresh our memory on which party was in control of both chambers of commerce during the years of 2007-2009?

We can agree to disagree This thread is about Social Security and the COLA, not who was to blame for the 2007-09 "Great Recession..."

It was about 10 years ago and Clinton caused the Obama Great Recession

What do you think GIVING $25,000 for home purchases, $50,000 for start up businesses, and all the other money she wants to PRINT and spend will do to the inflation rate.

That's just rhetoric. The President doesn't have the authority to do any of that, it has to go through Congress.

She can suggest that Congress consider such a bill, but that's about it.

Arby's has regular roast beef's 4 for $10 on sale , gone are the days of 5 for $5. Inflation is stagnant my big ole ***

The 5 for $5 was about 30 years ago...

I've come to realize that a lot of people (most, maybe) don't understand what we mean when we talk about inflation. We're talking about the rate by which inflation grows, and the rate for a good economy is always 2-3%. Meaning, prices should always go up 2-3% each year, and that's good as long as wages go up at the same rate or higher.

The inflation rate was great from 2016-19, right at 2%. But then it dropped to 1.4% during COVID, which is what led to the recession and subsequent hyper inflation in 2021-22. By 2023 it was back to 3.4%, which is a little high but OK. And the 2024 rate is 2.5%, which is ideal.

Prices should never go down. If they do, that's called deflation and is a sign of a major recession. Which is what happened after the 2007-09 Bush Recession.

I removed several posts that were really just the same thing over and over, related to whether Kamala Harris was the tie breaker to the aforementioned bill that had already been answered and is off topic for this thread.

Fascinating spin.

The truth still remains that there is two chambers in congress. Harris's "tie break" only applies to Senate, which was your claim that she could have done something.

It ain't a one person government, still.

Ps. Not everything is always party lines, which is a good thing. Voting party lines is silly.

Democrats were in total control for two years. Now spin that.

Spector youre aware thats just for the Senate right? And that there is also the House of Reps.

Our government is not meant for one person rule.

The United States Congress is responsible for determining the federal minimum wage. They do this through legislation, primarily the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The FLSA sets the minimum wage rate that employers must pay to employees who meet certain criteria.
While Congress sets the federal minimum wage, individual states can also set their own minimum wage rates. In many cases, state minimum wages are higher than the federal minimum wage.

It is not up to the Vice President to create bills. Congress does that. The Vice President only votes on legislation when the senate has a tie.

As any good real Republican would say, funding needs to come from somewhere.
As any real Democrate would say, tax the rich to fund the poor.

In reality, both parties "just print the money".. In the short term, some first time home buyers and some first time parrents will get a tax break. Buy if it's not funded, congress is just kicking the can down the road.

Last time I checked, Kamala was still Vice President and has no power over what the federal minimum wage is or many of the other things some of us om GW claims she hasn't done in 3.5 years.

She was the tie breaker for the inflation increase bill , so tell me more about how she couldn't get the $15 minimum federal wage

The COLA calculation is not arbitrary. It's based on a well known formula tied to the inflation rate for the 3rd quarter of the current year. It's not perfect, so higher insurance rates may be under valued in the calculation. Congress has not acted on changing this to make it more representative of seniors needs.

As was said previously on a similar thread... most people's insurance went up more than enough to wipe out the COLA increase just in 2024.
