You say that because you have no clue how to utilize debt. You think that the goal is to be debt free, but that's a fool's game. The goal is for the Debt to GDP ratio to be 100%... not 0%.
California's Debt to GDP Ratio is 49.5%, ranking it 11th in the nation. That's way too low... if anything, they should double their debt to invest more into the state's economy!
The highest Debt to GDP, by far, is Kentucky.

I have been to both those wastelands. In my opinion, either would be a great area to establish an American Colony. Might need to build reservations for the current inhabitants and provide some reeducation.

If California was a nation, it would have the 5th largest economy in the world. And it's been that way since 2017.
They literally pay for most of the other states, including North Carolina.
New York has the 3rd largest GDP in the US, and if it were a country it would be the 11th largest economy in the world.
If they were "severed," the rest of the nation would go bankrupt.

Seems neither are desirable places to live, high crime, high taxes, low regard for the Constitution, lower respect for the rule of law.
