"Cos that's what it was back then, and we didn't keep it. Old Ben must have been thinking about people like you when he made that statement.

Hisory and Ben Franklin says you don't know what you're talking about again.

'What have you given us Mr. Franklin" a man asked Franklin.

"A REPUBLIC if you can keep it. ' replied Ben Franklin.

And if anyone would know it would be someone who was there, and not some brainwashed communist liar two hundred years after the fact.

We are a democracy because we allow all eligible members of the country vote for elected representatives.

What constitutes eligible is at question.

We have seen bad actors in the past try to rule our votes from eligible voters for reason of tipping the election in favor of a particular party. This include not counting absentee balots delivered on time but had the us postage stamp upside down.

Thanks for the input, Bertie, unfortunately it won't do any good where it's most needed.

This is how the US State Department addresses the question.

While often categorized as a democracy, the United States is more accurately defined as a constitutional federal republic. What does this mean? "Constitutional" refers to the fact that government in the United States is based on a Constitution which is the supreme law of the United States. The Constitution not only provides the framework for how the federal and state governments are structured, but also places significant limits on their powers. "Federal" means that there is both a national government and governments of the 50 states. A "republic" is a form of government in which the people hold power, but elect representatives to exercise that power.

Well said. Don't let MAGA use semantics to destroy our democracy. They want the minority to rule by restricting voter rights.

Republicans are now claiming the USA is not a democracy but a republic. We have never been either one in their original definitions.

When Democritus first came up with his "theory" the Greek states consisted of a few thousand citizens who were eligible to vote, the vast majority of their populations consisted of ineligible peasants and slaves. The very idea of millions of voters casting their individual votes on each piece of potential litigation is ludicrous.
The Romans came up with the idea of a republic when they tired of their monarchy. It lasted for a while but again it could only work with a select few so called representatives. The Roman Republic descended into a dictatorship.
The USA "had" what could be loosely described in modern terms as a Democratic Republic. Unfortunately, it declined to where once voted in, most of the "representatives" served themselves, family and friends, lobbyists and their political parties instead of the constituents they claimed to represent.
Two MAGATS that were asked to describe a republic couldn't provide an answer.
I know this is "pearls before swine" when it comes to the MAGATS but learn a lesson from the Romans, don't let what was a purple cloak in Rome become an orange one in the USA!
