Because he was black, and the Republican party was the party of Lincoln. That was before the Republicans turned to the dark side. When the SOUTHERN democrats had restrictions for blacks to be eligible to vote. The same southern democrats that became southern REPUBLICANS when LBJ signed in civil and voting rights.
