From what I've read, it all started when a racist used AI to create a fake photo of Haitians carrying a dead goose.
The real problem is that Trump and his team fell for it. But I remember Rudy Guiliani saying that he and Trump regularly got their news from social media, so they've always been easily influenced with fake news.
