Jim Crow laws were overturned by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Although these laws were a southern experience, del facto segregation extended to the entire USA.

Mixing races was illegal, sex without marriage was illegal, h*mosexuality was illegal, women working was discouraged, there were white and black water fountains and bathrooms, white and blacked schools, blacks were not allowed to set in front of the bus, how did it change? The baby boomers just ignored their laws and rules. They couldn't arrest everyone. Even then some of us had to take up arms.
