1.81 yesterday at Murphy and Speedway (Formerly Hess) in Ashe County. Ingles and Quality Plus were still at 1.84.
Hunter, the manager at Hess told me a few months ago that they followed Murphy's lead on gas prices. And that has been my observation also.

FYI Backwater is right about NOT using ethanol containing gas in your lawnmowers, weed eater, generators etc etc-it ruins them as it sits.

That's what I'm saying. The 50-60 cents a gallon markup is for transportation, taxes, and profit. Sometimes it is as little as 50 cents, but seldom more than 60. Along now the spread is way higher than usual so the retailers must be making abnormally high profit. |
Add about 5¢ for transportation from Paw Creek or Friendship, I am thinking that it is about 3¢ for pipeline transportation from the refinery, a profit of a couple of cents for the jobber, and what is left is profit for the retailer. And most don't realize that a tank costs in excess of $50,000 and the insurance that is required to cover spills.
The ones that are controlling the pricing here are Murphy, Hess, and Speedway. They have their own refineries, own stakes in the pipelines and have their own trucking companies to haul it. I know for a fact if you try to undercut Hess/Wilco, they will sell gas below your cost for a few days to remind you who is boss. Lesson learned, do not price your fuel at their price or under, you cannot afford it.
