Best I can tell, it was Trump that said "just run the presses - print money" to pay off the debt... and the director of the White House National Economic Council said that he was "astounded at Trump's lack of basic understanding."

Again, you (like Trump) lack basic understanding. Inflation adjusted, gas was higher than $5 twice under Bush Jr and once under Reagan.
You also love to pretend that the year of the COVID quarantine didn't exist. And you pretend that inflation hasn't been a global problem... and you ignore that the US recovered more quickly than any other first world nation, thanks to Biden's policies.

You say that because you don't understand... or pretend to not understand... the basic concept of inflation.
Inflation adjusted, gas in 1918 was $4.79, in 1981 it was $4.29, in 2008 it was $4.32, and 2012 it was $4.47.
The real price of gas has gone down consistently since 1918, with the exception of the 1975 OPEC Embargo, the Bush Depression, and COVID.
