If I am not mistaken, the Washington Post combined two rather disassociated items of interest from the Southern Baptist Convention into one eye catching headline. Not only did the SBC decide to take a stance on In Vitro Fertilization, but there was also a vote held to grant Ordination to women which, though supported by a majority of those voting, failed to reach the 2/3 majority needed to change the Denomination's by-laws. By way of comparison we've seen the same thing happen in Impeachment votes in the US Senate in the past several years.

Three of the Word's largest religions all started in the Middle East and, traditionally, all of them have been primarily patriarchal since their inception. Orthodox Judaism, and Orthodox Islam and many Christian denominations prohibit women from positions of religious leadership. Others, including some branches of Judaism and Christianity, and even a few instances of particular branches of Islam have allowed women to take some leadership roles. Some Christian churches are led by female pastors, there are female Rabbis but there are no female Islamic Imams that I've read about.

A question that can be asked is: do you want your religion to attempt to mirror social changes? Both Judaism and Christianity recognize "God the Father" but not "God the Mother." Christianity positions Jesus as "The only Son of God" and even the Holy Spirit is referred to as a "He" in the New Testament. Some Christian conservatives enjoy pointing out that while women are not generally given positions of authority in the Bible nor in Christian history, there are still important women of faith referenced in both.

I can't imagine how opposing IVF implies any female inferiority.

Gent, you hit the nail on the head. Nevertheless, the MAGATS many of whom are Evangelists would like to see the USA become a theocracy. The founding fathers knew how dangerous that would be hence the statement in the 1st amendment.

While supporting, opposing, or introducing a certain position is not equal to declaring an act a "sin," I think that religious groups ought to stay out of politics and politicians ought to stay out of religion.

Trying to mix the two together lessens the import of both.

If you foller the science, you will note that both male and female still make a contribution.

The Southern Baptist Convention on Wednesday approved a measure opposing in vitro fertilization as "dehumanizing" and asking "the government to restrain" the practice...

In other news, they also confirmed that women are still inferior to men...
