No the water does not boil it just bubbles and cools the smoke and aid in removing nasty stuff.

Serious question... I've never smoked weed so I don't know.

I see on TV and movies all the time, people smoking weed through a bong and there's this gurgling sound. I assume that there's water in there.

What's the gurgling, though? It can't possibly be boiling that quickly!

And what's the point of the water? Is it supposed to filter impurities, or just add moisture to the dry air so that you don't choke... like a humidifier bottle on oxygen tanks?
