You make a great point... Zeppelin would have still been great had the Stones not led the way, but they might have just been a great hobby band in Robert Plant's garage...

Jimmy Page was an amazing guitarist, though! Groundbreaking for the time...

It's hard to compare them in the context of their time and contribution to pop music. Zeppelin is a generation after the stones and had the benefit of everything the stones had done up until that point. Hard to say if there would be a Led Zeppelin without the stones. The stones have some great songs and great records that pushed the envelope at the time. You can't always get what you want is an incredible song. That being said zeppelin as individual musicians zeppelin is far superior to the stones. JPJ is a classically trained multi instrumentalist. Bonzo is maybe the most distinct drummer of the era. The stones rhythm section is pretty unremarkable and the band relied on Mick's charisma live and Brian Jones's production prowess in the studio. In fact their drummer didn't even play the drums on you can't always get what you want because he couldn't hold down the odd groove the song needed. But every member of zeppelin is a complete force of nature and they really played together. The video that anti posted is the stones at the height of their fame is a lot of fun but the live version of the song is absolutely no match for the studio one. On the other hand this video of zeppelin is from 69 same year their debut album came out and it's clear that there's something special about them.

BUT the stones were one of the first bands who thought to take American blues and present it to British audiences in their own way, which is essentially what zeppelin is also doing albeit in a more refined way.
