While it's true that Mustaine wrote most of Metallica's good songs... Megadeth still feels like a complete rip off of Metallica. Every song Megadeth put out sounds like something Metallica did a year earlier!
So I have to give it to Metallica. The fact that Mustaine got fired and went on to Megadeth doesn't take anything away from Metallica.
