Shellenberger... told the hearing the Pentagon ran a secret UFO retrieval and reverse engineering program called Immaculate Constellation.
Shellenberger said "current or former government officials" had told him the program had "maybe thousands" of pieces of evidence showing UAPs.
"What the American people need to know is that the US, military and intelligence community are sitting on a huge amount of visual and other information - still photos, video, photos, other sensor information,'' he said.
"And they have for a very long time.
"And it's not those fuzzy photos and videos that we've been given. There's very clear, high resolution.''

Former US defence department counter-intelligence expert Luis Elizondo told the hearing government employees had been injured by UAPs.
In his recent book he claimed aliens secretly implanted microchips inside folk who have experienced close encounters.
The defence chief, who headed the US Government's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program - aka AATIP - launched in 2007 to investigate UFOs, said he had personally `handled' one of the `slimy' implants recovered from a member of the American armed forces.
He said the Government had alien microchip-style implants in its possession along with material from crashed `non-human' spaceships and that newly re-elected US president Donald Trump had been briefed on the nation's UFO program.
Elizondo's claims echoed those of Pentagon whistleblower David Grusch, a former National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency official, who told Congress in a public hearing last year the government was covering up a UFO crash retrieval program that has half a dozen spacecraft and even alien bodies.
It is not the first time reports of underwater UFOs have emerged.
Earlier this year Bob McGwire, a professor with the Institute for Defense Analyses, told officials probing close encounters of his deep sea one-to-one with an alien craft while on board a US Navy fast attack submarine.
He was carrying out classified work on the USS Hampton when he heard the sound of `something whizzing by'.
The sub's onboard sonar determined the object was travelling through the water faster than the speed of sound.
McGwire, who works for the scientific institute and Virginia Tech research university in the US, said no manmade craft could have travelled that fast.

"We were underway and all of a sudden I heard a sound. It is really strange and clear that something is whizzing by us,'' he said.

His account emerged after the release of a video showing US Naval personnel aboard the combat ship USS Omaha having a close encounter with an orb-shaped UFO off the coast of San Diego in 2019.
