Please do not listen to the guy who says that SP2 is "bad", and DEFINITELY do not let him work on your computer...Christ...

You need SP2, not for the auto-updates, but for broader driver support (for digital camera, peripherals, etc), as well as enhanced networking features, built-in Firewall, better wireless support/speeds...the list is endless.

If the KB article that BlueRidgeGuy linked to does not help, you may be running a cracked (illegal) or OEM copy of XP, that has problems installing SP2, without it being slipstreamed into the original XP disc.

Whoooa - If the PC gets on the Intertubes at all, it NEEDS SP2. Microsoft is no longer providing auto updates to XP unless you have SP2 installed.

SP2 seems to work better for me on my laptop and it also allows you to update other programs you might want to consider.

honestly, u dont need to update to SP2... they say its better.. but its not. its about the same, and maybe a bit less good.
