Walmart has Linksys Wireless routers. Those are the cheapest (good brand) with a very good instruction manuel on how to set them up.


There are hundreds of ways to set one up.

Price comparable models at Staples and Wal-Mart.

Also, Best Buy if you live close enough to one to make it worth your while.

You will connect the network cable from the cable modem into the WAN port on the back of the router. Then plug the network cable that leads to your desktop into the back of the router. The desktop should function as normal.

Then just run the installation CD for the router.

Can I assume you had a desktop before that was hooked "directly" into the cable modem?

If thats the case, Otto is right. All you need is a wireless router. Note that wireless routers also have ports for standard network cable, so you don't have to buy a wireless card for your desktop (unless you want to move it past the length of the network cable).

The router will come with an installation CD that will walk you through all the necessary steps.

okay so but the router, plug the desktop in that and then the laptop will be wireless??? I am clueless lol!

You'll need to buy a wireless router to connect to your main PC, then network your laptop with the main PC. Of course, there might be a better way, but this is what I did.

I dont know alot about the whole wireless deal so could someone please help???? I bought a laptop that has built in wireless, what else do I need to buy so I can use Charter internet??????
