wireless card

Sorry for the lack of info...I'm pretty much computer illiterate...

It's a Sony Vaio, running XP, I've checked on my network connections and it's recognizing the card, but it will not connect.

The wireless router I've tried to hook up to is a Linksys (i think) at a friend's house, and he said he's never had any trouble with anyone else's laptops getting online there. At work, I have no idea what the server is or the router...no clue. I've also taken it to McD's on 421, and it won't recognize that wireless network, either.

In Device Manager, it's showing that the card is working properly.

My guess is its drivers and the laptop isn't seeing the card. in most cases i have seen with these cards. YOU MUST INSTALL THE SOFTWARE 1st and then install the card. IF you install the card and then the drivers most of the time it gives troubles.

CHECK IN CONTROL PANEL THEN GO TO DEVICE MANAGER then Scroll the list looking for the PCMCIA SLOT and MAKE SURE THE CARD IS IN CORRECTLY. THEN SEE IF THE DEVICE IS WORKING AND THE DRIVERS ARE LOADED CORRECTLY.

take the card out and it should have an fcc number on it or a model number. or look at the manufacture of the card. I am guessing it is a pcmcia card so yes they can be changed easily. You should be able to see and icon in the lower right of your screen that shows the pcmcia slot and what is loaded in them. OK that said you can also go to control panel and look at your networking then then check the card make sure it has a signal. OK next if you have a wireless network and it has security on it you are going to have to tell your network card the name of the connection to look for or tell it to connect to any network it can see. However it your network router has security on it then you are going to have to go to the router to tell it to allow your laptop to connect.

The card can also be checked in Device Manager to make sure the drivers are installed correctly!

1st you need to KNOW does your computer see it and then take the next steps.

You should tell us one what kind of card it is and then tell us the model or fcc id. You can find or download the correct drivers several different ways.
Next it would be a good ideal to include the name of your OS
what type of router you are using and also let us know IF you have security setup!

I bought a refurb laptop, and I can get online thru my cable modem, but I can't get on via wireless network. I've downloaded any drivers I can find for the wireless card, but I don't think I have hit the right one!! Are wireless cards easy to change? I'm beginning to think that's my best chance at getting online thru a wireless connection...

thanks!
