I write six days a week and use Dragon Naturally Speaking.

You'll get out of it what you put into it. One training session is not enough.

It does get better over time, although there will still be a few edits to make here and there.

If you buy, get Version 12 as it is the latest.

Don't buy the earlier versions just because they may be cheaper.

Accuracy increases with nearly every version.

Thanks for the input. I can accept some errors. I can correct those typing with one hand. I just got an iphone and got the greatest app for it that does voice to text, texting, facebook etc. It has an email option which I havent tried yet and this app even puts in the punctuation! It recognizes my voice right away too! I could always use that and email it to myself and then forward it to my instructors. I HIGHLY doubt business math and accounting 2 will be extremely writing intensive. The college is offering me whatever accommodation I need while recovering. Who knows! I may be preparing for dooms day (surgery) too soon. They will probably set a date months from now :(

Yeah, Satan - that's what I figure I'll try this weekend. Load it to the desktop and plop it on a flash drive. I have a couple of blank 16GBs around.

We picked up Dragon Speak for $20, NIB, on one of the deal sites, but haven't tried it yet, as we wanted it for the baby laptop, which has no CD drive, and I keep forgetting to look for the download online. I figure if it doesn't work, I'm out one bottle of Port - no great loss (unless I'm totally out of Port).

And Fins, if my company ever started using speech to text in the office, I'd end up hauling out the Keltec and either putting one in my brain or going postal on the rest of these people. It's bad enough I have to hear 30 or so coworkers yammering on the phone in this loverly cubicle farm. I can't imagine having to also listen to them when they're writing email or other stuff.

Fins (view profile)

It doesn't work. And for the record, neither does Dragon Speak. With proper training of the software you might get a 75 to80% success. And know that on top of it not being 100% accurate, dictating to a computer is awkward. Especially since you also have to include punctuation. I wish you luck with it, but don't set your hopes too high

and its annoying as f***

I didn't even know there was a free Windows version. I'm very low tech though. I just discovered today the speech to text thing on my cell phone. I'm finally joining the text world.

Good luck Irish. If you need help typing your papers let me know. I can try to do some of it for you, but it may take me awhile.

I would use windows speech, and get a good head set.

The joke with IT guys is if apple and google can neither get speech to text to work 100%, what makes you think a $99 program is going to work? That said, a lot of people do like dragon speak. The program has been around for decades now. But those that use it have accepted a percentage of error (like with windows) and think its fine. But dictating for a research paper is a big difference than doing some spreadsheets or typing into chat rooms. Consider that large companies haven't converted to speech to text software.

I would say though that the free windows version is just as good as dragon speak. So being its free you can try it.

I have wondered about programs like this in the past because I have arthritis and carpal tunnel, but I'd say Fins is correct and it might be more trouble than it is worth for you to try to get it to type a paper for you. Do you have any friends or family you could dictate a paper to on cd or recorder?

I use Dragon Premium 12 for spreadsheets. It is a learning curve, but the more you use it, the more accurate it becomes. I am doing a 300 item plus appraisal right now and it sure has saved the old arthritic fingers a lot of work.

The program I used to "type out" those 800 word college essays was on an old AOL CD. I had to read sentences to allow it to learn hillbilly but it worked like a charm and if it made a mistake I could say scratch that and it would erase the previous phrase. I even used it in some of the first chat rooms and everyone thought I was a speed typist.

Since I take classes online and will be having surgery that I will most likely be advised NO typing, I found out, DUH that I have it. I have read blog after blog on the pros and cons. I would prefer NOT to pay 100 dollars for Dragon plus the cost of a mic. Has anyone used it? I just want it to write word documents for me. I have read it makes some mistakes which I can live with correcting if it types out a huge paper for me..
