No as you install win 7 it will ask for the xp cd only to see if you can update to 7

OK ...Well another question, if I'm starting with an empty drive, do I need to install my XP first in order to qualify for the upgrade? Upgrade used to mean that you had to have the other product in place first, IIRC.

Ok win7 retains XP windows as OLD.windows. you can access it copy it move it.
But you need to re install every thing else. So no
Here is what I do.
Install 7
install MS virtual PC

install XP and programs in Virtual machine
works great

Personally though I would do an old fashioned back up and then a clean reformat. reformatting occasionally is a good idea any way.

Flo, what are you talking about? An upgrade on OS doenst wipe your drive. Although, if it is like previous versions, you will be better off to wipe everything and start fresh. Otherwise you may get some strange glitches.
Windows 7 is very reliable though. Best version of windows so far. Why do you want to still have XP? I believe all versions of 7 have compatibility mode where you can tell a program to run in XP mode if your program doesnt have a Windows 7 patch. This works 90% of the time.
Personally though I have some software that just will not work other than in XP (thanks Microsoft for deciding to get rid of active sync and never thinking if that might be a problem). So I have 7 Pro and do run the XP virtual machine.

You are not eligible to download Windows XP Mode. You must have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate to run Windows XP Mode.
But - your old XP key will still be valid as an XP key even after the upgrade...you're aware it will wipe your drive, right?

Does anyone know if: when you install a Win 7 upgrade from XP, do you still retain use of that XP OS or does it get cx'd out or the MS book of life?
I thought I read somewhere that you could run in an XP mode with an upgrade ... Is that true and how does that work?
