radio giant you might also have a few programs on your startup that are not needed and you could remove them to speed it up. and there is a folder called prefetch that can be cleaned out to speed up the process also

Ain't it the truth, LocalSportFan? Vista is the slowest booting operating system I've ever seen.

My two year old desktop system with fully-patched, Vista Service Pack 2 takes probably four minutes to boot, and settle down.

Most people define "booted' as being at the desktop. But any Vista user knows Windoes shows you the desktop LONG before things have settled down enough to begin work. I count "booted" as everything being loaded, settled, and in normal operaton. About four minutes! On my system, the last thing to load is the ATI icon in the taskbar...so I don't do any work until I see that little red varmit.

My 64 bit Vista laptop, with 4GB ram (twice as much as the desktop) boots about twice as fast.

I read an interesting piece on Tech Republic about Win7.

A lot of the new features in Win7 have been available in Linux for a while now.

Want to know which systems runs XP quicker? A mac! Seriously, this is one part where it;s not necessarily MS's fault that their OS loads slowly compared to others. Throw it on an Intel based mac, and it flys.

It's all in the chipset!

Sure ticks me off about PCs when I pick up an Apple laptop, hit the start button, and have it booted and ready within a few seconds. iPhone's are also taking the place of my laptop for most tasks. Hard to beat the portability. If I could print more documents from my iPhone I would use it about 90% of the time.

I sure hope Windows 7 is better than Vista. Unfortunately, I've already heard that boot-up time is actually slower for Windows 7 - which is a huge disappointment for me. Microsoft really needs to solve some of its compatibility issues - is 7 a better solution? I think I would wait to upgrade an existing system when some of the bugs are worked out and the Security Packs start to come out. New systems, I would go ahead and get 7.

Well it doesn't matter now, does it? How's everyone like it so far?

On another note, I finally upgraded to Vista!

If the vendor has no problem with it so be it. They should have been told of any time restraints.

God may well love us, NaturalMan. But what if you found out God used a Mac?

You're right, they are - but the only ones they will 'fasttrack' according to them and get to you with next day shipping are with either Vista or XP, not 7. In other words, they are delaying the end user receipt of the OS until the official release date - they are just pre-orders.

pk, I have received NO instructions not to sell early. I spoke with my vendor today and he told me I could sell when I received the copy's.
Sold one today, nice quad core machine with Windows 7 installed.
Have a great day everyone and remember God loves you!!

It's basically just Vista with some new "Window shades" and better stability, isn't it?

Big whoop! I'm going to get the free upgrade for my laptop, but I'm not touching my other systems with Vista or XP. At least I don't think so.

Unlikely as it may sound, 64 bit Vista with 4GB of ram is rock-solid on the systems I've tried it on. And FAR MORE RESPONSIVE than 32 bit Vista with 2GB ram on this da@n desktop I'm sitting at.

Right, I'm familiar with VARs and builders getting it early - with instructions not to resale to end users until the official release date. You would be listed as a VAR, not an end user.

Wholesale suppliers and system builders have had it available since the end of September. Retail software is not available until the end of October.

I am getting it from my vendors. If they can sell it then why can't I?

Considering the official release date is still several days away, how are you able to offer it early? Either it's pirated, or you're not honoring the license agreements you have with MS.
