Actually, $53 for the replacement part and their time is not a bad price.
If the problem was solved.
Hopefully something has just come unseated and that's an easy (free) fix.

Actually, this might not get moved to Tech Talk.
The OP is trying to determine if they should get a refund.
I'd say they should.

A laptopinverter is a small circuit board, usually about the size of a pen. Internally, a laptop runs on a low voltage, with the exception of the screen, which uses a backlit liquid crystal display (LCD). Without the inverter and the bulb it powers, the screen would be too faint to see properly. By controlling the output of the inverter, the laptop can adjust the brightness of its display. Some types of laptopinverter are able to do this automatically by using a small sensor to detect how bright the room is, and adjusting their output accordingly. Hi. BRG . This is gonna be moved to tech.

Backlight has gone dead because the inverter is dead.

Screen light flickers then goes out. you can see the screen if you shine a flashlight on it.

Probably not. They're probably charging you by the hour, and so the same amount of time would have been spent whether they'd sent it home or not.
You should post in the tech section and see if someone here can tell you what's wrong. Like a mechanic, a computer shop can pretty charge you whatever they want, and you'll have no idea if it's reasonable or not.
