fisrt of all the question is what are you working with, what model of tv and what model of computer or where are the jpegs stored at or on, next step is the answerable

I never look in the tech section. If I had I would have had a couple options for you. One is a wireless presentation gate way. Viewsonic did make one, dont know if they still do. But connects to a TV or projector using the video inputs, then the computer connects to it through its wifi connection.

Another option would be a media extender. THis could be an old xbox, or a few companies make dedicated media extenders. One thing that is really cool with a media extender being you have a HTPC, you can put them in other rooms and then have access to the content on your HTPC in those rooms. They work very well. One home automation company has based their design on them.

The WD device connected easily enough, good picture quality, and reasonably fast - though I am testing with only a handful of images on a thumb drive instead of a larger device.

One important feature - I can either browse by folder, or by date. Not certain yet if that is the file creation date, modified date, or the date stamped into the EXIF data...

There are a million different ways to view jpgs on a TV - you can connect most video cards directly to a TV, laptop with TV out, ipod/zune with a dock or AV cables, a HTPC, a DVD player with a USB port, burn em to a CD or DVD and view em on a dvd player, use a memory card and view them from the wii or xbox or ps3, TV with a built in card reader, BluRay player, multimedia HDD, plug the camera into the TV with the AV cables, MVP units, Popcorn Hour and clones, etc etc - the list goes on and on. I personally use a HTPC, and have used most of the above.

But this isn't for me, its for an elderly family member who just ditched his film camera for a digital camera. He wants to import the pictures onto his PC, and tag them by location, date, subject, etc. Easy enough using a product like ACDSEE. But his PC is over 75 feet from his HDTV that he wants to display them on. I know he cant (cheaply) run HDMI cable that far. He has no home network, but it would be trivial to setup a second PC, put wireless on both and run it adhoc (no broadband where he is.)

But I honestly don't want to go that route. Has anyone here used a multimedia HDD? Not only would it serve as a backup for his images (he could take it where the PC is to copy the images onto it occasionally), but they often come with remotes, etc that would be beneficial. If so, what software is on it, and does the slideshow feature support searching by tags?
