as far as laptops go most can upgrade the RAM fairly cheap and some have removeable hard drives. other that that you cant really do much too em' if you did replace anything else the cost would be too great to matter.

Ram and larger Hard Drive can be installed by the user (if you have the software disks to reinstall)
Ram usually involves removing ! screw and snapping it in.
Hard Drive requires software installation / copying
Any thing more is usually not feasible

with the prices on the entry level machines these days, consider just buying a new one .... lots of the ones @ $400 & $500 will probably do fine for what you need
