trying to pull up 192.168.2.1

My guess is that DHCP has been turned off either at the router, or at the laptop. DHCP is what allows a router to assign the IP address, gateway, and DNS (translates website names into IP addresses).

Send me an IM with the results of the ipconfig /all from a command prompt and I can probably tell what is wrong.

Thanks to all for the info.

Now I have another question. My laptop finds the Belkin wireless router, and connects with it. But will not pull up the internet. Ran the diagnostics tool and passes all the tests until the last test, ping test, then gives message - failed - no default gateway.

What does that mean?

There are 3 "private" IP sets:

10.x.x.x (10.0.0.1-10.254.254.254)
172.x.x.x (172.16.141.1-172.31.254.254)
192.168.x.x (192.168.1.1-192.168.254.254)

If you don't have a machine on your local network, you will not be able to pull it up. Home routers' internal IP addresses usually end with .1 or .254. 192.168.2.1 is a pretty commonly assigned address for a router.

The easiest way to tell what address your router uses is to bring up a command prompt and type ipconfig /all. and look for the default gateway.

I think that's the default address that Embarq uses for their DSL modems around here..

If you have a router between you and the dsl modem, set the router to be 192.168.2.2, reboot, and you should be able to hit the DSL modem. Ive always found it best to reconfig the dsl modem from router mode to bridge mode, and let my router do what its supposed to be doing.

That's a local network IP, not a public IP. It usually points to your own computer unless you're on a network, in which case it will usually point to the first computer that was set up on the network.

Meaning, if I type it in, it will look for my computer. If someone else types it in, it will look for their computer.

Technically, you shouldn't be able to pull it up from the browser unless you have a program (like a web server) installed on that computer to allow it. If you can usually pull it up, then you'll want to see what's going on with the computer with that IP on your network.

I am trying to pull up on my browser 192.168.2.1

and it isn't pulling it up. I thought this was always accessible, but Google isn't pulling it up.

Can someone else please try and open that, and let me know if it pulls up for you?

Thanks!
