I got an Averatec 3700 series 12.1" screen laptop from Sam's Club for $799. Its got 512 MB DDR ram, 80 GB hard drive, DVD+/- burner, firewire, 802.11g wireless. It also has a 4 in one card reader for digital camera cards. I like the smallness of it for portability. Good luck on your search.

Laptops are a pain to upgrade, too, so when I bought mine almost 2 years ago, I decided that "there's no such thing as too big." Back then, I felt like I was going overboard, but if I hadn't then I would probably be buying a new laptop sometime this year.

Mine's similar to Smitty's. It has a 40G hard drive, 512MB of Ram, and a 1.8G processor. It only has a 15" screen, though, and I wish it was a little bigger, but it suits the purpose for now.

Pretty much any of the laptops Dell sells right now would be able to handle what you want to do, although a DVD recorder would be an add on. Also, keep in mind you can't copy movie DVDs. My usual answer to "how much do I need" is how much do you want to spend. I don't think most people will be happy with the very bottom end, and most people don't need the high end $2500+ machine. You can spend between $1000-1500 and have a machine that most people would be happy with.

My recent purchase is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a Mobile Pentium processor, 60Gig Drive, 512Meg Ram, CD Recorder/DVD Player, Wireless "G". After upgrading it from Windows XP Home to Windows XP pro and upgrading the basic warranty to the 2 year extended, I paid just under $1100, shipping included. So far, no complaints. I watch DVDs, do VB, SQL, and web programming. I don't do much with music, but I do some photoshop stuff with images. So far, no complaints.

Ok I was looking into buying a laptop and while I know how to use a computer I have very little knowledge of the tech stuff so I want to start this post to ask that stuff.
OK....first I want a laptop to take to work and surf the web, watch dvd's and listen to music record dvds and download music and edit pics. so what specs do i need. Iknow that the faster the processor the better and more ram the better and more HD the better. But How much Do I really need???? Also I know nothing about sound cards, video cards, and wireless internet. There are so many options and there is really good expensive stuff but do i need that??? Also tv tuners????? looked at those to go w/ laptop and wanted to know the best?
