btw - I don't work on pc's for a living (good thing - I'd starve!), not because I can't, but I've moved on to another side of the IT field. Hats off to the people that can stay current with the hardware thats out there!

@ Aunt Flo:
$100.00 seems to be a reasonable price but If I were your customer I certainly wouldn't mind paying you for your labor especially for the more techie based stuff such as complex virus and worm removal. I find it wild that you work for free even if you take tips. I just can't compete with that at all. This is a business for me so I must get paid for my knowledge, and labor. You are right about having to wait. This is also true when doing automated virus scans.
Spy bot will take over an hour to scan at start up on a HDD with over 85 GB's worth of space consumed. I did that on site after running malwarebytes full scan and told myself, never again. While your waiting for a computer to fix itself you can be working on other machines if you are offsite in your workshop. This is what I prefer. If it is something as simple as a HDD or definitely a memory module replacement then onsite makes more sense. @ Bennett if you would, please point me in the direction closest to Wilkes where I can take the exam for under $200. This is great news. The last time I looked at it on Comp TIA's website it was at least $500.00. Thanks for the correction there Bennett. Could you also provide me the URL so that I can check those price points myself. It would be greatly appreciated. I have plenty of Windows XP SP3 OEM slip streamed disc. It takes a very long time even with those working.

Oh I do - but even with sp3 on the image already, it still takes forever. I value my time more than others I guess, but most of my work is actually done for free. I stopped taking paid work a long time ago. Anything I receive is in tips.

GEE Flo I thought you would have a slipstream sp3 laying around. Same goes for PC84. hence my price question. Also A+ is 170 per exam.

I would charge $100 AFTER xp sp0 is installed - just to have to sit and wait while it installs the 14,000,000 updates that are going to be required. Even if you already have them available, or slipstreamed in. I can cook dinner for 12 in the time it takes sp3 to install, and heaven forbid if you update .net.

@ Bennett
A Simple Defense: Not To Offend: Rather To Explain My Costs:
55.00 one time compared to at least $60.00 an hour anywhere else is not that high IMO. It is very simple to perform a reload but some do not have that base OS knowledge to perform a reload their selves or are scared they will tear up their PC. It also takes nearly 3 hours to perform a reload if it is XP and that is without doing any prevention software downloads and updates. This time estimate just includes doing all of the windows updates and of course backing up any data requested to be saved and restored and then scanning it for infections purging what is infected or suspicious. I would never charge $55.00 if they have a factory image. You should know that I'm not that greedy or ignorant based on my past posts here on go Wilkes. The charge for a restore from the factory image would be a modest $15.00. I do know what I'm talking about and I just hope you realize that. So you can do the math if you want to for 3 hours of offsite work @ $60.00 an hour run against a $55.00 one time fee. Which is Cheaper?

@ Bennet,
I'm glad you are A+ certified. This proves you know what you are talking about. The only reason that I am not is because it is $500.00 or more to take the test. This is disposable income that I don't have yet because my business is just now starting to lift off the ground so to speak. I have the knowledge to be A+ certified and have had that knowledge for a while. It is just a money issue.
With the correct amount of dollars generated from happy customers, I will be able to acquire my A+ certification. As far as my Net + goes, I am well on my way to rehashing the knowledge I once had to acquire it also. It just takes allot of practice and studying. Again, though it cost allot to gain one.
As far as my post. What I missed is the fact that she was able to restore her PC to it's factory settings. Without my reading the rest of the post I was too quick to respond with what would have applied nicely to her situation had she still been unable to POST.
Being she is able to POST now, the advice you have offered is very good and I would have offered similar advice with a wider range of programs. I too am all for prevention. This saves customer's money and me time. Customer's become happy and are retained because I prevent all future threat types from getting on their PC's. My customer's are very satisfied thus far. Just ask around.

First off 55 dollars to reload windows from a factory partition is high. Second if you read the post it says it was restored. She just knows it will mess up again. I m preaching prevent here. Also on a side note, I have been A+ net + certified longer than you have been using PC's LOL OMG

Don't Assume It is a Virus:
Why do you guys assume it is a virus. Just wondering if I am missing something hear. It could just be a bad HDD which is very likely or a corrupted boot loader or partition. Bring it by my house in millers creek, NC and I will diagnose it for you for free.
Service Call Offered:
If you wish to have the problem fixed for a small cost I am more than willing to help you out. Visit my website @ www.mypctechoncall.com or ring me up at 336-981-4157. I look forward to possibly hearing from you. Guys no offense whatsoever intended but from what I see she cannot boot up. Current Troubleshooting Methods To Try: For now, try booting in safe mode with networking. If that fails try doing a repair of the OS with the recovery cd or OS disc making sure you match your Operating System to what you have on the disc. If neither methods work you will most likely need a reload. I can do this for a one time fee of $55.00.
Keep in mind that if you are able to boot in safe mode and cannot access the internet or see something on screen that is suspicious you have most likely been infected with a very nasty virus.
If this is the resulting case. Go to another machine and put two programs on a disc and install and run them on the problem PC in safe mode. If either detects root kits see if they can be removed by the program.
If it says it cannot without a reboot or it cannot at all then a reload is necessary. I can still more than likely back up your data before performing a reload.

Download and update an antivirus product of your choice. All computers mess up occasionally. It might take 20 years and just hasnt happened yet to some people, but ALL of them will eventually take a dive and need to be restored.
