After you rebooted, did you go back to msconfig to make sure that they weren't checked again? I'm willing to bet that the wcmdmgrl file rechecked itself.

You might have to go to Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs, and completely uninstall WildTangent. This is the control panel for the Hewlett Packard games, though, so if you play any of them then you might not want to remove it.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then the next thing to try is HiJack This. Go to http://www.download.com and download it (it's another freebie), but before you run it close every program that's running. Once everything is closed, run HiJack This and click on Scan. You'll see an option to save the search to a log; do so (this will be a plain text file), then open the file and copy-and-paste the contents for me to look at.

ok you are right I misspelled both of those. err!!

any way I unchecked the ones sugested and turned my antivirus off redid the speed test and got these results
143/372
165/375
110/360
246/377

I about flipped on that 246 so I ran it one more time and got 106/368

Still quite sluggish to me. Any other Ideas? Surfer had a web site I am going to check again cause I think I may have done it wrong -- we will see
I trully appreciate your help, I know you are a busy guy

But4grace, this one is for you:

Go back to msconfig, and uncheck the blank one for sure. Then, click on Apply and OK, then restart the computer. When it comes back up, it will give you a pop-up warning that you're running in a special mode. Check the box that says "do not remind me" (because you'll probably keep it this way), then click on OK.

Now, go back to msconfig. Is the blank one still unchecked, or did it check itself back?

While you're here, put a check next to these, too:

hpsydrv
(are you sure that this is "hpsydrv" and not "hpsysdrv"? The first one is a Windows file, and might be required, although I get mixed information on that. The second is a file from Hewlett Packard, and is just wasting memory so it should be unchecked)

sgtray
(did you install a program that reminds you to back up your files? It's odd to see this one on a personal computer. You can uncheck it, unless you use it for some reason)

wcmdgrl
(are you sure that this isn't "wcmdmgrl"? If so, this is definitely a problem, possibly your biggest problem, and should be unchecked. If you did spell it right, let me know because I can't anything on wcmdgrl)

After you uncheck these, click on Apply and OK, and then reboot your computer again. When it comes back up, go back to msconfig and make sure that they're all still unchecked; if they checked themselves back, let me know which ones.

Assuming they're all unchecked like they're supposed to be, try the speed test again and see if it's any better.

Also, it's worth knowing that, IMO, antivirus programs do more harm than good. They give the average user a false sense of security to make you think that you're protected, when in fact any virus that's worth the time to build will be able to bypass the antivirus program. What's worse, they often make your computer run slower while protecting you from viruses that you'll never get if you don't open an email attachment.

So, I would suggest that you turn the antivirus program off completely, and see if that improves your performance any.

Sassymama, I'll research your files and post again, but it will take a little time; you have a lot of them! But 763 download is an awesome download speed, and at first glance I don't think you have any real problems. In comparison, But4Grace had a download speed of around 100, and dial-up will be around 50.

I would be tempted to say that it could be your telephone line, but since you have a good upload speed then that must not be true. Something is running on your computer that's tying up the download ports... we just have to figure out what it is.

When you ran Ad Aware, did you download the newest database, too? To do this, you would open Ad Aware, then near the bottom you'll see a link that says "Check for updates now" (just above the "Start" button). If you didn't do that, then it probably didn't catch everything, so you'll want to do that, then run Ad Aware again.

If you did do that, then the next logical step would be to use a program call HiJack This. But before you do that, let's look to see what legitimate programs are running in the background of your computer. It's possible that something is running that's perfectly acceptable, but is still tying up your internet.

To do this, go to Start > Run, and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes, of course). In the window that opens, you'll see a tab called "Startup." Click on this, and you'll see a list of items with checks beside of them; this is everything that's scheduled to start when you turn the computer on.

This will take a minute, but I need for you to post every single thing that's listed here. That way, I can look through the list and figure out if something is a specific problem.

ok Jason, I downloaded the ad-aware it found 15 items removed them and I did the speed test again (4 times) here are the results in order
download Upload
251 377
249 374
188 372
113 375
I am so frustrated with this crazy thing I have DSL with sprint and really think it should be surfing and moving faster than it does. I do not have any problems with the speed of any of my other programs just the internet.
