it just freezes,nothing works ,no error message,all i have in audio devices is

When you say that it "locks up" when you try to install sound drivers, what exactly do you mean? Does the computer just freeze up altogether, or do you get an error message? If you get an error message, what does it say?

Go to My Computer, then Control Panel, then Multimedia. Go over to the Devices tab, and click on the + sign beside of Audio Devices. This will open a list of all of the Audio devices installed on your computer. What does it say?

i have an ergo elite 2 laptop,running win98,every time i try to install sound drivers it locks up,i have tryed the drivers off the ergo website and many more off the net,but they all lock my laptop up.I have two chips in my laptop,which are

ESS1968s
Have been trying to get my sound back for over 3 months so if anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know.
The sound was perfect untill i re-installed win98...
