So far so good with Mint Linux on my netbook. "Mint" Linux is a tweaked version of Ubuntu, that comes with all the codecs needed for multimedia pre-installed (downloading codecs to Linux distros can be tweaky...and most don't come with codecs to play DVDs, mp3s, mp4 videos, Flash, etc.)

Everything worked right off the bat. It recognized my wireless and installed proper drivers. Ditto for the soundcard and video. It's easy to browse the network, and find shared files on my other computers. It's just a friendly experience.

Being a spinoff of Ubuntu, all Ubuntu software works on Mint Linux.


I've probably changed the OS on my netbook a dozen times. Each time I end-up thinking of something I wish it did better. The thing that will likely frustrate me (if anything does) this time is the inability to use my netbook to sync my Sandisk mp3 player with Rhapsody (which I've subscribed to for years). But I've got a desktop and full-size laptop for that.

I like Mint Linux (with it's minty-green theme), and when I eventually buy a more powerful netbook, I'll probably have it dual-boot (Win 7 and Mint Linux).

Of course it's silly for a guy with extremely poor vision to use a system with a 7" screen. But I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer (brightest bulb in the fixture?)
