I had a similar problem with my Dell desktop. The service guy found I only had 256k of memory. I ordered an additional 512k on-line and that made a huge improvement. Was able to install the 2-strips myself in the 'dummy' slots, and it only cost 30-some dollars. So, it may be ram....

The main thing you need to do is go to start then Run and type in Msconfig. Once the window is up go to the start up tab. Uncheck all the boxes except your anti virus. This will stop every program from starting up on its on each time your computer is started. Only the programs you start will run. After you uncheck all the boxes then click apply and ok. You computer will need to restart. After it does another box will appear and tell you what you just did.

While a free antivirus program is 10000% better than none at all, they DO get paid for that free product. Just not from you. AVG recently got so bad with flagging keygens, I had to switch to Avast. Then it started getting the same way, except it wouldn't allow 'ignore' on certain ones (that I know were not malicious.) I've since switched to a custom version of Norton - sadly - a legit copy.

I use a combination of SuperAntiSpyware (free version), Ad Aware, and Spybot Search and destroy. Sounds like overkill, but it's really not, as each almost always finds eomthing the others missed.
that kills the spyware. As for viruses, I've been running the free version of Avast Antivirus for years, on all of my systems, and NEVER gotten a virus. When you go to a page, it not only looks for viruses on that page, but takes the links on the page (before you do), and looks for them there as well. Pretty cool, and again, absolutely free. In fact, all my recommendations are free.

don't use the free version of spy doctor. It gives false positives and the last time i ran it, it also loaded ad-ware.

Sounds like you have a spyware infection. Ad Aware is what I generally use, but there are several free programs to choose from. Some will catch things that others don't, so in your case it's a good idea to use 3 or 4, just to be sure.
Go to http://www.download.com to download Ad Aware, and also Spy Doctor. Others can probably recommend other free ones to consider.

defrag, disk cleanup, close used programs, remove unused programs and programs you do not need to run all of the time from start-up, scan for viruses and malware.
