Jason, I don't think you have a government security clearance. Maybe I am wrong, if so Im sorry for doubting you.

I've taught government classes on internet security, and been a speaker on similar topics at numerous government-related seminars.

ARPLANT was first created and linked form UCLA to Stanford 1969 The "@" email scheme was invented in 71
The DOD did not come along until 1975
However the internet remained in the public college system from its inception. It literately took 30 years of research and development.

Jason, I would guess you know what you are doing as far as your site goes but I doubt you know anything about the governments capabilities. The truth is, I would be more of an expert about that sence I spent over 20 years working in that area. Most of those 20 years on the leading edge of information technology. I know what the government can and can't do.

The internet was created by the military for a system of comm. that couldn't be crashed incase of war.
Basically correct.
It is and always will be controled by the government.
Completely incorrect. The concept was created by the government, sure, but there's no way that they can control it. That's just a conspiracy theory that has absolutely no base in logic.
When you visit, for example, gowilkes.com, the address is a mask for the server's IP address. Your internet provider (Wilkes Telephone, Embarq, Charter, etc) reads the domain name, then brings up the appropriate IP address. Government isn't involved on any level.
Which, of course, is why you can access websites that are hosted in other countries.
I know Jason was trying to get some grant money. Wonder how that went? I heard there was some people with a little fed pull trying to make sure he didn't get it. I don't know, just a rummor I heard. That's a terribly ridiculous rumor. Here's the original thread:
The grant for which we were applying was from Chase and Living Social, not the government. In order to qualify, we needed to have 250 "votes" by a certain date. I only found out about it a few days before the deadline, though, and the application required the voters to have a Facebook account (which a lot of our users don't), so we failed to get the necessary 250 votes.

So, you name a few pieces of equipment. The internet was created by the military for a system of comm. that couldn't be crashed incase of war. It is and always will be controled by the government.

And so on to a soap box. The internet is made of NTTP servers, IRC servers and http servers.
People forget about the first two because they require more knowledge than point and click

Gowilkes is under a federal grant i believe ?
Sigh. Are we? Please, elaborate. I'd love to hear more about this imaginary grant.
All the internet is funded by our government. The internet is paid for and run by our military. Umm, no it's not. The Internet isn't a singular thing at all; instead, it's a series of servers that are connected together by allowing access through an IP address and web server program (like Apache).

All the internet is funded by our government. The internet is paid for and run by our military. They just allow us to use it so they can keep tract of what we are thinking.
