Install any copy you have a key for, then....

Make sure it's actually a full copy of Windows, NOT a "restore cd", which is system specific, and would install not just Windows, but all the drivers for the computer it was intended for (maybe not yours!), as well as the junkware that manufacturers put on new PCs.

Might wanna send anything like product keys through pm's next time, as I'm thinking the lists will get the threads nuked. :)

you can also try installing the newest version of java http://www.java.com/en/down...
and try updating Windows XP at http://www.update.microsoft... ,must use IE for this site.
then tell it to show all updates, with any luck the .net or another patch might fix something but the chances are very small.

Sorry about the keys up above.I had them all in separate lines but when I post it comes out like a paragraph. Each product key has 5 separate blocks with 5 digits each. They are still in exact order so just start with the very first one and it will be fine.

Note from GoWilkes: I removed the product keys posted. Pixel made an excellent point.

If you do a new install and have to use a different key just remember when your doing the windows updates never install the -"Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications" update and you'll be fine. You can just uncheck it.

Bean said it was windows xp pro. I assume the cd I have came with someone elses computer. As of today, I can't get my cd drive to read anything. I have to put the disk in the dvd drive to get it to do anything. This is new, but has happened a few times before. Usually I can reboot and it fixes that problem, but not this time.

Is the copy of the XP cd you have actually XP Pro, or XP home? It also needs to match if it's a retail copy, or OEM (came with a PC or purchased at Best Buy, etc..)

Did the Bean say if it was OEM or Retail or VLK, etc?

Can you burn CD's wit the computer still? If so, PM me.

Ok. I have looked everywhere that is possible for the prod key on the computer, there is not a sticker anywhere on it. I also downloaded Magic Jelly bean and used it to find three prod keys. The one it gave me for windows xp prof. does not work when I try to use it with the disk I have.
I think I need to clarify that I deleted the files about 6 years ago. Most everything works, but like I said earlier, I can't use cont-alt-del, task manager,I can't open any Java files etc.

The product code is better known as the product key.

If you have the product code for Windows (Should be on a little label underneath if it is a laptop; side or back if it is a desktop tower. ) as long as you have this, you can re-install XP even thoughh you are using a different copy than what came with the machine. The label will have the Microsoft logo on it.

Google, download and install the Magic Jelly bean, if it will still connect to the net and let you install software. Jelly Bean will tell you what your current codes are, so you can use them on the reinstall.

you can try to install and undelete program onto a U3 usb drive and try to undelete. You can take the drive to a 2nd computer and try to undelete. There are programs that will tell you what you code is but depending on what the install disk asks for it might not be the right code. Some disks want the license number and some want a different number and then tell you what the license number is. Also if you have to call Microsoft to activate the software then your information will have to match the information they already have.
If you can not get it to work then you can put Ubuntu on it for free.

I need to reinstall my Windows XP. I have a copy of the disk, but not the one that came with my computer, so I don't have the authorization codes. My computer was given to me with windows already installed. I deleted a lot of stuff that was left on here and I think I may have deleted some important stuff that I should not have. Task master doesn't work, cont-alt-delete doesn't work etc.
Do I need to do a backup before I try to do anything else?
