What you will have to do is look for a oem part replacement. To just go out and buy a replacement wont work unless you buy an external cdrom that will run you about $70. The reason that just any old cdrom wont work is that gateway uses propriortory parts so you will have to buy from them Dell is the same way. your est bet will be to buy a external cdrom or dvdrom so you wont have to open your case or remove any screws just plug and play.
hope this helps.

right click on My computer and click manage and then click on device manager. on the left pane. now expand your cd or dvd option.( on the right pane) you will now see your cd or dvd devices right click the one with the problem and click uninstall. this will uninstall the driver for the cdrom. after that is finished restart your pc and when it comes back up it will load the default driver and hopefully that will fix your problem if not I can come and take a look at your pc to further trouble shoot.

Check the disk for scratches or dirt. you can trouble shoot the cdrom by putting in a cd that you know is a good one and see if it recognizes it.

My old Gateway Solo 9100 laptop that I use for hot rodding diesels and motorcycles all of a sudden is not seeing a disc in the cdrom drive. Any ideas? Thanks
