True, Blueridgeguy. Let's hope the virus was "stupid".
You might want to try imaging software like Acronis True Image, to keep an image of your hard drive...everything...including Windows and all your files...on an external drive. If you have lots of data, it'll take a few hours to restore the image should your computer become trashed, but it's much easier than reinstalling and updating everything.
I'd also recommend an off-site storage company like Mozy (which I use), or Carbonite. Both run silently in the background, backing up all your data off-site. If my computer never boots again, I won't have lost a thing. THAT is security...and worth more than the five-dollars or so a month!

"Do a system restore to a date earlier than you think you got the virus."
If the virus does it's "job" correctly....
All restore points will have been removed.

Do a system restore to a date earlier than you think you got the virus. Go to help menu and type in system restore, and it will lead you through the process. You will lose anything you downloaded or saved after the restore date.

I run the free Avast antivirus program on all of my systems (XP and Vista, 32 and 64 bit). NEVER a virus, NEVER a problem. And again...it's FREE!
Go here to the address below, and download and install the Avast Home Edition FREE (on left side of screen). You'll have to register, but that's no big deal. They won't spam you.

The Windows one won't wipe anything off at all. I run it every few days, and have been very pleased with it.

First, you can run Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner. It will check for viruses and let you know if you have any. It will also fix some viruses. It is free, and from Microsoft. It will also check for spyware, check your registry, and a few other checks to keep your computer running smoothly. The web address is http://www.microsoft.com/pr...
I would run the full service scan, and then the complete scan.
