NFS via Unix System Services on Vista is able to xfer 200% quicker via lan than Windows File Sharing - even if both boxes are just Vista running NFS.
Unfortunately, there is a drawback to NFS on Vista - if you are simply browsing the directory structure, it feels sluggish.

When Vista first came out, copying a folder full of large files (my music folder, for instance, which has more than twelve THOUSAND songs), would take absolutely forever, and often leave the computer unstable. Doing the same in XP was a piece of cake.
It wasn't until Service Pack 3 that Microsoft got a handle on what is, after all, one of the three most commonly used functions...COPYING (the others being, of course, cutting, and pasting). TRULY elementary stuff that Microsoft, with it's immense resources, struggles and fails to just get right! I'm glad I'm not a stockholder! I have ZERO confidence in the crew from Redmond.

But speaking of bugs, I have found that Windows 7 Backup utility is a tortoise. I was looking on a Windows forum and I am not alone. Let's see, 47 hours and I am still at 32%. The problem has been acknowledged and they are planning to address the problem in future, but at this point I am ready to cancel and use one of those off site services, anyone use them, recommendations?

My files came up straight away as well. I have not had the media streaming problem. But I went straight from xp to windows 7 and skipped the whole vista thing.

Spades, please explain what you meant by "made the mistake" of upgrading your laptop. I'm about to do the same to my Gateway laptop. Should I stay with 64 bit Vista? It's rock solid (funny think to say about Vista, but true), and working great.

As long as your subnet and gateway are the same on both computers, you shouldn't have any problems.
I made the mistake of upgrading my laptop to Windows 7 (It isn't exactly the best OS to be streaming media through the house with) but all my shares for all the PCs I have came up right away. Made life easier without me having to type out the whole UNC path.

Since Windows 7 goes about sharing differently than XP and Vista, when I update my laptop to Win 7, will I still be able to access my shared files that are on my Vista desktop? I assume the answer is yes. If so, how difficult is it?
