OpenOffice has lost its main developers, and is currently being surpassed by LibreOffice. They are very similar, free, and work with MS Office 2010. I reccomend to all my customers, and I also install in all of my operating systems.

Also, you can allways download another trial from microsoft for another 60 days worth of MS Office.

Thanks,

The home and student version of MS Office is affordable and has everything you need such as Power Point, excel and word and one note. I have been using this software since 2003 and its hard to revert back to a free edition because if the features.

"I thought WORD software came with a computer." .... you thought wrong
your comp probably does have wordpad (a very basic free word processing program) but its not the same as Microsoft Word (has all the goodies and they want $ for it)
http://www.openoffice.org/ works with word documents and is free
