Portable Hard Drive Resurrected...There is life

I had been planning on buying another case to put it in, but have never thought about it while I was out and about.

Apparently from all the online boards I have been reading the original cables apparently go bad for some unknown reasons as it seems cord replacement was the cure for most.

I was hoping when I opened it up to be able to put the hard drive in my laptop but the connections were different. This old laptop is going on 6 years old and has been very good as I only had to reload windows once or twice. Today's programs have begun to exceed the 2 gig max memory of this thing.

It could have been a nosie problem due to lack of shielding on the other cords.

usb 2.0 is backwards compatible so that's not the issue. if you were using other people's throw-away cords they might have been bad but doubtful that all of them were bad. portable hard drives usually have that smaller-ended plug for the tiny port on the portable drive so unless you were forcing cables in that should not have been used... not sure what was going on and why it works all of a sudden.

i would immediately back up all the files on that drive. then run a complete scan of the disk to make sure there are no bad sectors.

by the way, if you have a portable drive like that, dead... you can open it up and remove the drive and put it into another device (or hard drive adapter) and use it that way or at least test the drive. missing the usb cable is not a big deal and there are dozens of ways around that.

Is it possible that all the other cords were USB 2.0 vs USB 1.0 or vice versa? I know the cords aren't supposed to be affected by the form factor, but I've seen the same thing as this with other devices and the cable completely made a difference.

It had sit for a year with no hope of ever working again. I had tried different computers and usb cables with no luck. Even had an expert through Segate tell me that it must be the board in the portable hard drive.

Forward to today about 15 minutes ago when I picked it up from its final resting spot. I had found a USB cable that I found in a box of old parts and then thought what the and plugged it in. The portable hard drive powered back on and has been resurrected.

Amazing the other USB cords I have tried in the last year have been throw backs and throwaways from other equipment and people. I find it odd but not unusual all those cords could have been bad. May have been for different uses.
