There are some companies that will let you download a copy from their website IF you have a new copy of XP. Dell and some of the others have this for their customers. Any others that do this are scammers, be aware. I have had to reformat a friends PC for him after he did this online. Stay away unless its from the company that sells the PC you have.

URN4it, this post should really be in the tech forum... but here you go.
I really suggest you check DELLs website. They have some great new computers loaded with vista and these systems are DIRT CHEAP. If you can afford $15/mo, you can afford one of these.

They have Dell inspiron 531s from $499 and up and laptop computers from . That price includes computer, flat screen 19" HD LCD monitor. System is a steal

But if THAT is too expensive. You can get the SAME systems from Dell's outlet store (these are previously returned items that have been resold after repair and are guaranteed to run like new.) The same computer will run you $239 - $399, depending. Keep in mind that that's JUST for the PC on these deels below.

Libraries have computers, friends and neighbors have computers. Don't complain, "act " .

You have to able to pull up things on their computers, and they have XP. I can't pull up some of the things that they send, so I can't take any on-line courses for one. another thing is like....last semester.... our teacher in developmental psychology sent our assignments on line. I had to run to the computer lab all the time. I live 15+ miles away from the campus, and having to drive up there for one little piece of paper is a pain. (and costly since gas is like buying gold now)

This thing would be ok if I was not limited to what I can pull up. I am full time at WCC, and it is vital to have a PC while enrolled. I just can't pull up whatever I need to. I have to have everything in RTF. Why did Wal-Mart have to take away layaway? That is sooooo aggervating that I get mad at them every time I think about it!

You can get anything if you look hard enough. Torrents are like the Cattle Sale of the internet.

This thing is a dinosaur!!! About a 2001 model Compaq. Would I be able to put XP on it? I am computer illiterate when it comes to the technical part of it. Also, I have stored a LOT of information on it. I have several short stories and almost an entire novel written on this thing. Would upgrading it cause me to lose this info in the main memory of it? Boy, I feel really dumb.

OK ... IF (and I mean IF) this thing will actually hold the program, how much does it cost to upgrade?

I can not afford a new PC right now, and this thing is probably too old to hold the program, anyway The LAST thing I need is to get into some kind of trouble that would cost me more $ than a new PC would! I am not sure if that is it or not. I can look. Thanks.

No way **** is gonna give their software away. The site you heard of is likely a scam or offering pirated software.
