Jason...thank you....Even though you were answering Radio's question...it fixed my problem!

Radio, open OpenOffice", then click on "Text Document" to open Writer. Go to Tools > Options, then click on the + next to the "Load/Save" section, then click on "General".

Under "Default file format", change "Document Type" to "Text Document" (for Word). Then to the right, change "Always Save As" to "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP".

Repeat for Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

I use Open Office to write radio commercials, and it's great. We have Microsoft Office 2007, and my wife prefers to use it for spreadsheets we need. But if it were just me, I wouldn't have Microsoft Office on the system.

My only gripe with Open Office, and maybe there's a setting I just can't find, but it always defaults to it's own file format. I'd love it to default to .doc format (in Writer), so I didn't always have to hit the drop-down menu. But that's a pretty minor annoyance for a truly great FREE office suite!

I use Open Office, too, but Melissa prefers Microsoft Office. Open Office just looks a little more like Office XP, where she'd gotten used to the newer look.

I've also recently switched over to Thunderbird instead of Outlook. It took about a week to decide that I liked it, and I had to download several add-ons to give it the functionality that I wanted, but now I'm happier with it than I was with Outlook. The biggest advantage is that there's no 2G limit on storage!

Open Office can open and save files as any Word format (including the DOCX format), but also has several dozen other possibilities. So you shouldn't have any problem with that. It can also export files as a PDF without using a separate PDF distiller, which helps me a lot.

I use OpenOffice exclusively. The only thing I would even consider Office for would be Outlook, and that's just because I haven't found any solution that is open-sourced I like just as much.

Okay, one more probably dumb question...If I needed to save my resume...would the format still work the same?

B/c I was recently displaced from my job....emailed my resume home from my work pc..and it keeps saving it to notepad? not what I want it to do..need to save it as a word document

Im so illiterate when it comes to this stuff....

My MS Office suite did not contain Power Point, so I use Open Office to handle .PPS files. Works great.

My wife insisted on buying Microsoft Office 2007, because she uses it at work and is familiar with it. Not me. I use Open Office exclusively in my work, and couldn't be more pleased!

Yes - use openoffice - trust me, you'll like the price.

As an alternative - if you still have the installation/cd key that came with your version of office, I can give you a copy of the install cd/DVD for whatever version of it that it is - and you can legally reinstall it.

I just realized that when my pc crashed back last year and I had to have it wiped clean that I lost my Microsoft Office..and it was not reinstalled...Im not sure where my disc is ...was looking out on the net..and saw this....Ever heard of it? Is it safe? Comparable? Or should I search for my disc and forget that?
