Need some memory

First, you've got to understand the difference between "memory" and "storage space". Others have pointed this out, but without explaining.

"Memory" or "RAM" (random access memory) is solid-state (no moving parts) circuitry that holds your operating system, and as much of your programs and data as space will allow WHILE YOUR COMPUTER IS BOOTED AND YOU ARE WORKING. This memory is completely wiped every time you shut-down your computer, or reboot.

"Storage Space" on your hard drive, is completely different...and what I suspect you're referring to. Data on it is there whether the computer is booted or not. This is where your programs, and files are stored long-term.

Hard drives are cheap. So cheap, you needn't fret over which programs to uninstall, or files to delete. Just buy one, and get someone who knows what they're doing to "clone" your existing drive onto the new one, then replace the one in your computer now with the new one. Problem solved.

are you wanting to free up storage space or memory? if its storage you can buy a new hard drive like others have suggested. http://www.newegg.com has good deals for those but you need to know if you have a IDE or SATA connection. another option would be an external hard drive available at walmart and staples. If you need a little bit of extra storage and you are on a tight budget go to one of those two stores and get yourself a usb flash drive.

burn everything you want to save to cd's or dvd's then delete it
($0.15 or so a cd or $0.25 a dvd)
or buy a 4 gig usb flash drive($10.00 ish) transfer the info then delete it from the pc .
or staples has a 500 gig external hard drive for $79.00 this week

free space? well, there are a couple things you can do

1. Go to control panel/add or remove programs/ uninstall the programs you don't need or use.

2. buy another harddrive, external hard drives are simple to install as long as you have a usb port

no, cynic, it works fine now, it's just older & has a lot of stuff on it & I wanted to know what I could remove safely to free up some memory
Take whatever you want to to Staples, but you can bet your bottom dollar I won't do any business with them ever again
I use spyware & virus protection, it's not that, it's my memory is almost full

PC Source fixed mine for $35 whereas Staples wanted $270.! I feel they tried to rip me a new one, I'm so glad I got it from them & took it to PC Source. I complained to management but they didn't even offer to make it right. I had already gave them $70. they wanted another $200. said it was a very sick computer and I bet you anything if I hadn't of went & got it they would of told me it was no good hoping I'd buy a new one.

If you're already having performance issues, then it doesn't sound like PC Source did a very good job of fixing it! I would bet that you still have a lot of viruses and spyware on your computer that's eating up your memory.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

some of your programs might not be needed at all times but are enabled on startup. you can go to start and click run (windows xp) or for vista click your icon(start icon) on bottom left and in the search box type msconfig. click on the startup tab. look through those items but only unselect programs that you know you dont need at all times or old programs you dont use anymore.
this will make the program not start on startup. there is also another place to look for programs that your operating systems looks for to run on startup but i would rather you have a technician clean those files. I offer these services visit http://www.pro-tech.5u.com for contact info
