I use QUICK MEDIA CONVERTER I got free from download.com and Microsoft movie maker free from Microsoft. Maybe these will help.

For a very long time I used Super © (http://www.erightsoft.com/S...) for converting all of my videos. It converts any kind of video/audio file imaginable. I'm pretty sure there is an option to change the video from 4:3 to 16:9 and vice-versa. Not sure though, I don't need to convert video files anymore.

Opencasket, you're right about FairUseWizard. I use that fairly frequently for converting dvds. But I'm talking about converting avi files (and others) of shows like Tekzilla, and others from the 'net into a format that will work.
WinAVI you say? I'm off to investigate.

Satan...you should learn to read, Buddy. My cell phone stretches whatever aspect ratio it's fed vertically to fill the 4:3 frame.
What I'm looking for is a program that will let me LETTERBOX 16:9 programs like Tekzilla (www.tekzilla.com) to 4:3...with black bars, fooling the phone into thinking it's a 4:3 program.
Remember 4:3 televisions? I'll bet you've got one or two stuffed away somewhere. This is how they handled widescreen material for decades. THAT is what I'm looking to do...create letterbox 4:3 videos from 16:9 videos. Simple as that. I should have been more clear in my wording.
When encoding a 16:9 video, I carefully calculated the pixel count to exactly 16:9...the the phone still stretched it to fill the whole screen. So letterboxing seems to be the only option.
Hint: I'm not technically illiterate. IEVERYONE needs help now and then. Smart people ask right out loud.

RTFM :P it should tell you how to change the aspect ratio.
you can encode at 16:9 all you want but if you have chosen 4:3 for play back that's what your going to get

I have a Motorola EM330 cell phone, which plays video very well. Unfortunately, no matter the aspect ratio of the video you play, it stretches the picture vertically to fill the 4:3 screen. This drives me nuts, because lots of the video I want to watch is 16:9 widescreen.
I've tried a variety of encoding programs, and for the life of me can't figure out how to ADD black bars to the top and bottom, so the phone thinks the video it's playing is 4:3, when in fact it's 16:9. There are lots of methods for removing black bars. It's far more difficult to find info about ADDING them. Any suggestions? I'd prefer a free program, like Any Video Converter Free, or "Ipod Me"...both of which I have tried, and which work great encoding videos for other devices.
