Need Advice About Correct Way to Turn off Computer

I second Plasmastar on Hibernation mode would be the best method as it puts all the data onto the hard-drive and then shuts the computer down. Where as sleep mode puts everything into memory, and then goes into a low power state.

Shutting your computer down will NOT cause your PC to boot up slower next time. An almost full or badly fragmented hard drive might cause that though.

I personally recommend hibernating it, compared to sleep, as it's still consuming battery in sleep mode. Most machines handle hibernation just fine, so I wouldn't worry too much. I find myself "running" my PCs for weeks without actually having to shutdown/reboot Windows.

I would just put it in hibernate mode or sleep mode but be advised there can definitely be issues with getting it to wake up. It may require bios configuration to get it to work properly. I will do that for you for free if it is just configuring the bios. No problem as it is like a five minute job. Just PM me if your interested and you can drop it by the house. No Pressure, No Worries.

There are good arguments on both sides of this issue. I have used sleep on my laptop for over 3 years with no issues. If you are taking switching for days, I would turn it off.

Ihave two laptops now. I have internet access via Charter modem--not WIFI. If I want to unhook my ASUS laptop and surf the internet on my Toshiba laptop, should I put the ASUS in sleep mode or Shut it down ? When I just had the ASUS laptop it was hooked by cable to the modem and I would always put it in sleep mode when I was through surfing the web. My sister said not to use the shut down mode because if I did so repeatedly it would get to taking longer and longer for the computer to reboot. Why so many ways to turn off computer? My brother-in-law put his desktop PC in Hibernate mode once and had a great deal of problems trying to restart it!
