My Gateway laptop is now running Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala"

I'd have to jump back through the hoops I went through to get things like DVD decryption working again, wouldn't I? That was about an hour of my life I'll never get back!

If you upgrade and Ubuntu goes away all ya gotta do is reinstall grub.

My laptop now dual-boots (thanks to Wubi) between 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10, and 64 bit Vista.

My machine is a Gateway nv5214u...with Athlon 64x2 processor, 4GB of ram, and a 320GB hard drive...20GB of which are given to the Linux partition.

The system boots perhaps twice as fast into Linux. You can begin launching applications and working a LOT faster once you reach the desktop. And overall performance is far "snappier".

Most things "just worked". I had to jump through some hoops to enable DVD playback, however.

It was simple to download the latest ATI drivers and "control panel" (under Administrator) for the ATI graphics in the system.

The first time I downloaded some packages, I was getting a download speed in excess of 8mb per second WIRELESSLY over my 10mb connection...while my wife "surfed" in the other room on her laptop. Pretty cool!

If I upgrade to Windows 7, I hope the Linux installation doesn't get hosed!
