Empowers, I agree that it sounds like you have a hardware problem. The suggestion of physically cleaning the inside is a good idea; it could be an issue of something (dust or hair) floating in to the CPU, and it has currently been pushed away a little. It can easily come back, though.
You could also have a virus that's only running at pre-defined times. They used to be called time-bombs, but I don't know if that's still the accurate term. These are pretty common.
Quack, when you say "it kicks me back to the desktop page", that implies a virus. A hardware problem wouldn't cause your browser to redirect; that's always a virus. These most commonly come from Facebook. Try downloading AVG Antivirus Free or Avast Free from download.com (the free versions).
EastmanFamily, if you can use Chrome or Firefox, but not Internet Explorer, then you most likely have a spyware infection. These most commonly come from Facebook, too. IE is very susceptible to spyware infections, while Chrome and FF are less susceptible. Try downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from download.com (the free version).
After you've fixed it, I would recommend that you stick with Chrome or Firefox, anyway. Malware and viruses can eventually cause your CPU or hard drive to go bad, so it's best to avoid them altogether.

Sounds like a virus. Install Malware bytes and see what it finds. I assume that you are running a security program.
If that does not work ask the gwliar, he is like Carmac the Magnificent, he knows all

With all the supposed problems it had during the week, freezing up after only 4,5 or 6 minutes I cannot understand why it is suddenly working so well today? Its as if it never had any problems before. Still scratching my head over this one.

empower I am having the same problem as you. It locks up on me and the arrow or hand just will not move until it won't to. It also kicks me back to the desk top page. Oh what trouble Computer put us through.

No WiFi here. Have rebooted, cleaned out viruses, etc. I will take Zombie's advice and spray it out with compressed air. Could be dust and cat hair messing it up.

Are you using wifi? Sometimes my router/modem needs rebooting. Just unplug it, wait 20-30 secs and plug it back in. It will take a minute or two to fully start back up. If things are still slow to load, try rebooting the computer, as well. Seems, sometimes these things just need to reboot and start over again fresh. The router/modem can also get a little hot, especially when they get some age on them.

Open it up and spray it out with a can of compressed air. Be sure to spray your cooling fans extra good.

Wow, all week my computer is on again, off again, freezing up after only 5 or 6 minutes, sometimes less, etc. Today, Sunday morning, no problem. So what gives?
