Laptop=Acer
desktop=Custom build (by someone who knows and cares what they're doing) with an eye on quality, not price

Lenovo/IBM. I know that IBM no longer builds them, and as of this year they don't even carry the IBM name/logo on them, but they are bullet proof. The specs could always be better, but they do offer higher end workstations and laptops than the standard corporate machines also.

Not to mention - they are dirt cheap on the secondary market.

I've always used HP, and have had good results. Used to have a Gateway laptop, it too was also a good machine.
